I have followed your instructions but there still is no template visible. When I try to manually install the template I get : "Warning
Template Install: There is already a Template using the named directory: Install. Are you trying to install the same template again?" with no option to proceed. Should I delete everything and start over or is there a way to install your template?

Our suggestion is completely reinstall your Joomla, first you have delete all Joomla files and folders from your server then upload all files from quick-start package, as you know it already has Joomla and proceed with installation, at the final step do not forget about to install the template sample data, please see the following page for more info: http://www.astemplates.com/joomla-template-documentation/109-002032
My host tells me there is no index.php installed. Should that not be part of the template package ?

I'm getting there slowly but surely. How do I modify the contact details in Position 30? I can change the address and phone number but there are Icons, Social Media buttons to program, and a small form which I would like to relabel and add a box to.

Contact Details with icons, Social Media and Our Newsletters are different modules, you have to edit them one-by-one, all of them you can find in your Joomla admin panel -> Module manager published in position 30.
All is going well and the client loves the template.
Almost done but have encountered an irritating issue in the administrator interface. In article manager and module manager, when you click on search tools, a strange text box opens up under each of the selection buttons. If you click in the text box the drop down selector opens underneath it.
The filtering is functioning OK.

It looks like you have some problems, we can't connect your admin panel, error 404. As well the url to the image which you have provided to us doesn't work.
One more question.
I am using the newsflash module as you can see.
When you click on a newsflash picture the breadcrumbs show home->home->newsflash, and all home page modules are still displayed. I need the behaviour as in your template example, where a click on the newsflash picture takes you to the full article only.
